Welcome to Don't Panic!

This site is dedicated to providing a set of free tools and resources for those interested in role-playing in the worlds created the late Douglas Adams. In serving this function, we also explore some of the broader aspects of the many different Hitchhiker universes.

"Moving something from one medium to another is very interesting - it's a lot like carrying a picture or a piece of clothing from one bit of lighting to another. Suddenly it looks very different. What interests me a bit further down the line is the way in which the different media interrelate - you can hand things off from one to another, you can exploit each other's strengths and weaknesses."

Douglas Adams

It is important to note that some of the stuff you find here is based on what Douglas Adams wrote, while some of it isn't. Most of the additional stuff has been derived from the works of Douglas Adams, either as extrapolation, interpretation or speculation, and has been created in the spirit of the original material.

If you feel the urge to contribute to this site, you are urged to sign up, complete your profile, and to read and abide by the writer's guidelines.

Both the designers' notes and reader input have been captured in a blog which will be updated regularly, along with news and dialogue with users of the game.

The Game

If you're looking for something fresh, funny, irreverent, and different to every other role-playing experience out there, then it's possible that you've come to the right place.

Don't Panic! is a not-for-profit role-playing game produced by and for fans of the late Douglas Adams. In particular, we will be focusing on the universes occupied by that most incredible of pan-dimensional publications, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The Community

While most of the stuff presented here has been created with the express purpose of being shared and enjoyed, it would be even nicer if you could take time out to show your support for the project by joining the Don't Panic! community.

There's no catch - all that it means is that you become a registered user and that you can leave feedback or even become a writer for the site. We don't have any forums yet, but that will be rectified soon.

The Guide

THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY - DON'T PANIC!

"In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitchhiker's Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopaedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects."

"First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words DON'T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover."

Douglas Adams

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is an encyclopaedic compendium of not entirely serious Guide Entries which, through rambling articles and humorous third person anecdotes, illustrate the way the hitchhiker's universe works.

The Source

There is no definitive framework within which the Hitchhikers' universe takes place. It draws from a variety of self-contradictory source material published or presented in a variety of different media.

Thanks to Douglas Adams' introduction of the Whole Sort of General Mish-Mash theory in his last book, Mostly Harmless, there is absolutely no need for the fans of the Hitchhiker's Guide and other works by Douglas Adams to worry about such complicated and largely unnecessary things as continuity or canonicity.

In simple terms, anything and everything goes, regardless of the medium from which it was sourced.

What people look like, what they said, what they did, and in what order it all took place is largely irrelevant.

It all just kind of happens.

This site is set up to allow people to navigate through its content online, removing the need for reference books or other ephemera. That said, its only right that we provide something for you to use when you don't have access to a computer. For this reason most content can (at some point) also be accessed in the form of downloads.
