Paper, Scissors, StoneThis is a featured page

So what is this mighty resolution system? Some say that any game that needs a resolution system must be broken, while others say that every game needs such a system. Opinions vary, but the reason for introducing it here is simple: it trivialises disagreements.

The use of paper, scissors, stone as a means of resolving role-playing disagreements is a tried and tested method, especially in Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) games where fairness and a cool head are particularly important.

The rules for paper, scissors, stone are easy. Each participant places their hand out of the view of all other participants (either under the table or behind their back) and then, on the count of three, all participants simultaneously reveal their choice from one of three or (in some circumstances) four choices. These choices are as follows:

1. Paper

PaperPaper wraps stone, but is cut by scissors. Therefore, by revealing paper the participant beats anyone producing stone, but is beaten by anyone producing scissors.

2. Scissors

ScissorsScissors cut paper, but are blunted by stone. Therefore, by revealing scissors the participant beats anyone producing paper, but is beaten by anyone producing stone.

3. Stone

StoneStone blunts scissors, but is wrapped by paper. Therefore, by revealing stone the participant beats anyone producing scissors, but is beaten by anyone producing paper.

4. The Plot Hammer

BombThe Plot Hammer can be used only by the Guide. It tears through paper, breaks scissors and shatters stone. It is used by the Guide only when the plot requires him to win the challenge, regardless of fairness.

By playing the Plot Hammer the Guide is transparently telling his players that an arbitrary decision has been made because the plot requires it. Overuse of the Plot Hammer, however, creates an impression that the Guide cares only for the plot and not for the feelings of his players.
